Bloodborne pathogen training is required for employees with occupational exposure. Occupational Exposure means reasonably anticipated skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials that may result from the performance of an employee’s duties. The roles that include are defined in the Exposure Control Plan.
Bloodborne pathogen classes are offered in person or virtually by request only for University of Tennessee Faculty, Staff, or Students. Contact EHS at ehs_labsafety@utk.edu or 865-974-5084.
Prior to beginning work in a lab, all personnel should attend complete the Initial Training. Following this, all workers are required to undergo annual refresher training. See the Annual Refresher section for additional information.
Training should occur upon entrance to the laboratory environment and working with Bloodborne Pathogen materials. Retraining is to occur every year thereafter as minimum requirement and should occur if there is a change in the lab procedures that impact safe handling practices.
In accordance with the OSHA Occupational Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) Standard 29 CFR 1910.1030 all personnel working with unfixed human tissues, patient samples, or cell lines must complete both initial and annual refresher trainings for work involving bloodborne pathogens.
